Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this ex libris design with ink on paper, but we don't know when. The black ink sort of oozes around the forms of the lions. There's a lot of variation in tone where the ink has pooled. It's funny to think about the way someone makes these decisions with a brush, how much to apply, how much to leave open. Look at the lion at the bottom. It's only an outline, but it's full of energy, roaring into the negative space. Cachet's design makes me think of Art Nouveau and artists like Aubrey Beardsley. I love how both artists use the contrast between black and white to create these dynamic compositions. Art is an ongoing conversation that is always evolving and changing.
