Pieter Moninckx made this drawing of a farm with a haystack using graphite on paper in the 17th century. At this time, the Dutch Republic was undergoing a period of economic prosperity known as the Dutch Golden Age, partly due to new agricultural techniques. This image reflects the growth of a merchant class, with an emphasis on the virtues of rural life. Yet at the same time, it idealizes and obscures the realities of agricultural labor. The image creates meaning through its careful composition, using light and shadow to evoke a sense of peace. The drawing is also culturally significant, referencing the traditions of Dutch landscape painting. As historians, we can better understand the drawing by considering how these traditions were shaped by the social and economic forces of the time. For example, archival records tell us a great deal about land ownership in the 17th century. Considering art as something contingent on social and institutional context makes it all the more meaningful.
