This album cover design, "Band van het album 1865-1905," is made up of delicate white swirls on a dark ground, probably made with ink or gouache. It's really quite beautiful. The way the artist has made these tiny, careful marks is really lovely, the kind of mark making that comes from the hand. The cover is for an album commemorating 1865-1905. It's a very interesting time, historically. There is a kind of fragility in the repetitive, ornamental gestures of the design that feel very human. It reminds me a little of Hilma af Klint's work, in the way the artist is using abstract forms to create a sense of order and beauty, with a similar sense of personal style, even though Hilma was a generation later, born in 1862. It's all about that conversation, you know, across time, where artists pick up ideas and run with them, making something totally new and totally old all at once. Art, after all, is an ongoing experiment.
