Kent Monkman created "Study for Throwing Sodomites to the Dogs" to challenge dominant historical narratives. Monkman, who is of Cree ancestry, often confronts the ways in which Indigenous people have been misrepresented in art and history. Here, Monkman depicts a scene of colonial violence, turning a critical eye to the sexual repression and brutality enacted by colonizers. The painting references historical accounts of Europeans using dogs to attack Indigenous people. However, by using the term 'sodomites,' Monkman draws attention to the ways in which sexuality and race were policed during the colonial era. The work is emotionally charged, showing the stark cruelty and dehumanization inflicted upon Indigenous bodies. Monkman creates a counter-narrative which reflects the historical and ongoing trauma faced by Indigenous communities while confronting viewers with the uncomfortable truths of colonial history.
