Editor: This is an untitled painting by Roger Hilton, and it feels so… playful! The bright colours and bold shapes just jump off the canvas. What do you see in this work? Curator: Well, it's like a visual jazz solo, isn't it? Hilton's throwing these colours and forms together with such confidence. I feel the spirit of post-war liberation. Do you see the almost child-like quality in his forms? Editor: Yeah, I do. It's so free and uninhibited! Curator: It reminds me that art doesn't always need to be serious, you know? Sometimes it's just about the pure joy of creation, the wiggle and wobble of life itself. Editor: I never thought of it that way before, but I totally get it now. Curator: Glad to have added an additional lens.

In the early 1970s Hilton executed fewer oil paintings. Ill health was approaching and from October 1972 until his death in February 1975 he was confined to bed. During this time he completed numerous brightly-coloured paintings in gouache (a kind of poster paint) on paper. Some of these are figurative, some abstract. Given his situation, the vitality of these works is remarkable. 'Untitled 1971' is among Hilton's last oil paintings and it anticipates the uninhibited energy and invention of his gouaches. Hilton commented: 'I like my colours dynamic and strongly contrasted. After all, one prefers something alive to something dead. The more alive a person or a picture, the better they are ...'
