Francesco Londonio created this print, Standing Shepherd, using etching and engraving. These processes involve working directly on a metal plate, incising lines to hold ink. Look closely, and you will notice the distinct character of the etched and engraved lines. Etching allows for a more fluid, spontaneous mark, while engraving offers precision and control. Londonio likely combined the two techniques to create a range of textures, from the shepherd's clothing to the sheep’s wool. Consider the labour involved in producing this image. Each line was deliberately cut into the metal, demanding considerable time and skill. This investment of effort is at odds with the subject matter. Shepherding was a humble, rural occupation, yet here it is elevated through the artistry of printmaking. By appreciating the materials and making process, we see how Londonio transformed a simple scene into a work of art. It challenges us to rethink conventional hierarchies of art and labor.
