Niels Larsen Stevns made this sketch of a frog, plus a plant study, at some time in his life. It’s a quick study, a page torn from a sketchbook. The frog is captured with firm, confident strokes of ink, while the plant life below seems more tentative, scribbled in graphite. I imagine Stevns, out in nature, quickly capturing the essence of the living things around him. There’s a real sense of curiosity in his lines, as though he’s trying to understand how the frog sits, how the plant grows. The plant-life looks like some kind of gothic cathedral reaching for the sky, so wispy. This drawing reminds me of the sketchbooks of other artists like Leonardo da Vinci, where observation and imagination intertwine. Each line carries a weight of intention, a dialogue between the artist and his subject. It’s not just about representation; it's about feeling and understanding. And in that sense, every stroke is part of an ongoing conversation.
