Curatorial notes

Kamal-ol-molk painted this self-portrait, capturing his likeness in a muted palette. The artist's gaze, direct and contemplative, immediately draws us in. His eyes, framed by spectacles, hint at a deep intellect and a keen observer of the world. This motif of the all-seeing eye, prevalent throughout art history, echoes images of deities and philosophers. The eyes are considered a ‘window to the soul’ and as a powerful force engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. Consider the subtle positioning of his hands; although they aren't visible, it brings to mind the gesture of concealment or revelation – common in religious iconography across cultures. This recalls the ‘Veiled Truth’ seen in ancient mystery cults, or even the hidden knowledge sought by alchemists. The image evokes a sense of introspection, reminding us that the exploration of the self is a journey through layers of history, memory, and shared human experience.
