Endre Balint made "Dream in the People's Park" with oil paint, creating an image that feels like a memory, or maybe something half-seen in a dream. The colour palette is dark and murky, and the marks are applied loosely, as if built up over time. Up close, the surface has a textured quality. Look at the way he's layered different shades of green and black, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. The paint isn't smooth or blended perfectly; you can see the individual strokes and gestures, giving it a raw and immediate feel. The bottom left of the piece is lighter than the rest, and here you can see an interesting pattern created through layering. These patterns become more complex upon closer inspection, and it is unclear if these shapes relate to a certain style of architecture or not. It reminds me of some of the dreamscapes that Philip Guston was producing during the same period. Like Guston, Balint uses the ambiguity of the image to express the complexity of being in the world.
