Alfred Freddy Krupa made this COVID-19 artwork, number two, with watercolor, ink and paper. Look at how Krupa lets the ink and watercolor bleed and run. It's all about embracing the unpredictable, right? Like life during a pandemic. The browns and blacks give it this somber, almost ghostly feel. But then there’s that one tiny red bird, a rebel yell of color. See how the lines connect the birds? It's like they're trapped in some kind of web. I wonder if that’s how Krupa felt during lockdown? That bold, dark brushstroke at the bottom, it's like a barrier, a wall. But the washes are so fluid, so free, it keeps the piece from feeling too heavy. It reminds me a little of Cy Twombly, that same sense of controlled chaos, of letting the process guide the way. It shows how even in the darkest times, art can still find a way to take flight.
