Verena Loewensberg made this "Untitled" painting sometime during her lifetime with some kind of paint, probably. The color palette is amazing; it makes me think about the process of selecting and mixing paint and how that translates into visual poetry. Look at how the colors are layered like building blocks, creating a sense of depth that almost pulls you in. The lavender rectangle around the edge makes me think of an antique frame and it’s such a great framing device for the whole piece. I love the way the hues shift gradually, a harmony of green, blue, and lavender creating a rhythmic visual experience. It's almost like a color study, a process-oriented exploration of color relationships. Loewensberg’s work reminds me a bit of Agnes Martin, someone else who makes such amazing paintings. But the difference is you sense a very different sensibility, it really is a conversation. This painting is a reminder that art is about seeing and feeling, that there is no right or wrong way to interpret it.
