C. Goes made this small drawing, ‘Girl Sleeping by a Windowsill,’ with ink on paper, and the first thing that strikes me is the intimacy. The ink is laid down with a kind of loving precision, delineating the sleeping girl, the patterned curtains, and the plants on the sill with a comforting simplicity. The texture of the paper peeks through the lines, which adds a tactile quality to the scene. The marks are economical, each one doing its job to define form and space, but it's in the details that the drawing really sings. Look at the way the blanket folds, or the subtle shading around the girl's face. It's these small gestures that create such tenderness. It reminds me of some of Bonnard’s interiors, that same quiet observation of domestic life, and how artists keep having conversations with each other, across time, about how we see and feel.
