Jack Davis made this monster rally album cover with watercolor, and it's wild. It's all about the process, right? You can practically see Davis having fun, splashing colors, and letting the characters emerge from the chaos. Look at that pink gremlin blowing the flute. The paint is thin, almost transparent, but the color pops against the muted browns and purples of the background. You can almost feel the scratchy paper texture underneath. And then there is Frankenstein's monster on the trombone. It's like Davis is saying, "Here's a party, everyone's invited, even the weirdos!" There's a bit of Basil Wolverton in here, with those grotesque, exaggerated features. But Davis brings his own playful sensibility, reminding us that art doesn't always have to be serious. It can be a monster mash of color and imagination.
