This drawing of a seated nude male figure was made by Wouda Piera in 1783, using black chalk, gray wash, and white highlights on blue paper. The handling of the chalk is exquisite. Notice how Piera has built up the figure, using a combination of smudging and precise hatching to define the muscles and contours of the body, especially the sitter's back and left arm. The figure emerges gradually from the paper. The effect gives a sense of depth and volume, despite the limited tonal range of the materials. Piera would have spent hours on this drawing, carefully observing the model and rendering every detail. It is clear that the artist was skilled in the craft of drawing, and had a deep understanding of anatomy. The drawing stands as a testament to the value placed on academic training in the 18th century and the importance of skilled handwork in art making.
