This is Michael Snijders' Study Sheet with Drawing Examples: Heads, Animals and Fruit, made with etching. This drawing is full of naturalistic imagery, a cultural preoccupation in the Netherlands. In the 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age, there was a growing fascination with the natural world. This was fuelled by global trade, scientific discovery, and the growth of a wealthy merchant class who could afford to collect and study exotic specimens. Notice how the fruit, insects and reptiles are all rendered with careful attention to detail. This would have served as a valuable resource for artists looking to accurately represent the natural world in their paintings. Drawing sheets such as this circulated within academies or artist's studios. The aim was to create a common visual language. The presence of the human heads suggests that the human form, as well as nature, was worth mastering. Art historical research can tell us about the cultural values of a particular time, as well as institutional settings that supported artistic production.
