This memorial portrait of Ichimura Takenojo V and an unidentified actor was created by Utagawa Kunimaro I. The composition is dominated by pale hues, and the flat application of color emphasizes shape and line over depth, drawing our attention to the formal structure of the print. The figures are arranged to create a dynamic visual rhythm. The actor in blue, seated regally with a hint of melancholy, is juxtaposed against the second actor in a lower register looking up with adoration. Note how the lines of their garments and the objects around them lead the eye around the scene. The column of smoke that rises vertically on the lower right side of the portrait reinforces this dynamic. The calligraphy, though indecipherable to many of us, adds another layer of visual texture, balancing the figurative elements. This piece challenges fixed meanings by inviting a meditation on theatrical performance, memory and the ephemeral nature of fame.
