Robert Frank snapped this photograph, Mary and Andrea--Los Angeles, sometime in the 20th century. It's a small, intimate moment frozen in time. The light in this photograph is intense, almost blinding, but somehow it feels soft. See how the light floods in from the window, creating these halos around the figures of Mary and Andrea. It's grainy, like he was right there in the room, capturing a slice of real life. Frank isn't trying to hide anything, he leaves the texture of the film visible. It’s interesting to think about the emotional impact of that kind of directness. The way the light catches their hair, the folds in the sheets, it all feels very immediate and personal. I'm reminded of Nan Goldin. She also had a gift for capturing these kinds of intimate moments with friends. It's that sense of raw vulnerability, the beauty in the everyday, that makes it so compelling. Like a snapshot of a memory.
