This is Kees Stoop’s etching, “Boom in vlak landschap”, or "Tree in Flat Landscape." Stoop was a Dutch artist born in 1929, and his work often portrays the quiet, rural landscapes of the Netherlands. What might seem like a simple depiction of nature carries a weight of history, reflecting the Dutch people's deep connection to their land. After all, much of the land in the Netherlands has been reclaimed from the sea, and so exists because of an intense relationship between the people and the land. Notice the intricate detail in the tree and the subtle textures of the landscape, rendered with simple lines. This etching invites us to reflect on our own place within the natural world. It reminds us of the enduring beauty of the land, and prompts a personal consideration for the spaces we inhabit.
