This is an illustration for Vyšehrad, made by Artuš Scheiner. Scheiner used traditional materials, such as paint and paper, to create his illustrations. Focusing on a limited range of colors, he evokes a mystical scene with the wise Queen Libuše. The process of painting has imbued the artwork with a sense of depth and texture, particularly noticeable in the queen's golden adornments. Scheiner was a very skilled illustrator, and his aesthetic aligned with the Czech artistic traditions of the time, as well as the broader European canon of fine arts and design. However, illustrations are often considered a "lesser" art form in comparison to paintings or sculptures, even though they require similar skills and a great deal of work. By appreciating the artistry and labor involved in creating an illustration such as this one, we can begin to challenge the traditional hierarchy between fine art and craft.
