Jan Stolker made this print of Christ on the cross with Mary and John sometime in the 18th century. The print, which is based on a painting by Desiderius Erasmus, depicts Jesus on the cross with Mary and John standing on either side. The Dutch Republic of the 1700s was dominated by the Dutch Reformed Church, though this period saw increasing toleration of other religious viewpoints. The religious devotion expressed in this image is understated and reserved. It offers a distinct contrast to the more theatrical and emotional imagery of the Catholic baroque. As the art market grew, prints like this one facilitated the circulation of devotional images to a wider public. Art historians look into the circumstances surrounding the work’s creation to help us better understand the social role of the artist and of religious institutions. Historical documents, such as church records, diaries, and letters, offer vital context.
