Hendrik Meijer created this medal, called Utrechts wapengenootschap Pro Patria et Libertate, from silver in the late eighteenth century. It gives us insight into the political turmoil of the Netherlands at the time. The imagery and Latin text on the medal refer to the "Patriot" movement, which sought democratic reforms and greater citizen participation in government. The Dutch Republic was dominated by a class of wealthy merchants and aristocrats. As a result, ordinary citizens were politically excluded. The Patriot movement grew to challenge the established order during the 1780s. This medal, featuring a sword-wielding arm and mottoes of patriotism, would have been worn or displayed by members of the Utrecht militia in support of these ideals. The flags and banners of different regions of the Netherlands express the idea of a unified nation. Understanding the context in which art is made helps us appreciate its historical significance. You could research the history of the Dutch Republic in the 18th century, the Patriot movement, and the role of civic militias in political life.
