Charles Demuth made this painting, Machinery, using pencil and watercolour on paper. It's got these lovely, clean lines that slice through the surface, creating a dynamic composition. I love the way he uses watercolor to give depth to this industrial scene. It's like he's trying to capture the heartbeat of modern life, one brushstroke at a time. I can imagine Demuth, perched somewhere high, sketching away, trying to make sense of all this machinery. What was he thinking as he laid down these lines and washes? Did he feel dwarfed by it all, or energized? It reminds me of Léger and his own take on the machine age. Artists, we're all in conversation, echoing and riffing off each other’s ideas. It's a messy, beautiful dance. This piece invites us to consider how industry, technology, and abstraction coexist on the same plane. There's no one way to read it. It's a space for thought, feeling, and maybe a little bit of dreaming.
