J.P. Møller made this image of two sheep as a print on paper. We do not know exactly when it was made. Møller was a Danish painter during the Golden Age of Danish Painting when artists were interested in the naturalism of everyday life, rather than history painting. The image of sheep in Denmark at the time created a narrative of rural life, but also of the national economy. The print would have been made at a time when the Danish art world, like other national institutions, was being reorganized and professionalized. The art academy, for example, played a key role in developing artistic standards and tastes. To understand this work better, we need to research the history of agriculture and land use in Denmark. As historians of art, we try to reveal the relationship between imagery and Denmark's wider social, economic, and political life.
