Luc-Albert Moreau made this drawing in 1922, and the soft, smudgy charcoal suggests a process of building up the image through layers of tone. It’s all about how the hand moves, right? There's something lovely in the texture and the way the shading almost vibrates, especially around the eyes and cheekbones, it gives her face depth. Notice how the lines aren't perfectly defined; they blur, giving a sense of movement, like the image is still being formed. It’s not about perfection, it’s about the process of seeing and recording. That one stroke defining the upper lip, it’s so simple and yet it captures the essence of the mouth. It's these subtle choices that make the work sing! Moreau reminds me of other artists like Paula Modersohn-Becker. There is the same attempt to capture something essential and elemental about the human form. Art's not about answers, it's about the questions.
