Editor: We’re looking at Dieter Appelt’s "Tableau Oppedette" from 1980, a gelatin silver print that feels incredibly staged, almost theatrical. What strikes me most is the contrast between the vast, stony landscape and the solitary figure inside the cave, but, ultimately, I have no idea what it means. What do you see here? Curator: Ah, yes, Appelt. He invites us into a dream, doesn't he? Or perhaps a nightmare, depending on your perspective! This isn’t simply landscape photography; it's a tableau, a constructed scene meant to evoke a feeling, a memory. The figure with outstretched wings... Do they offer protection, or are they trapped? And that cave… isn't it womb-like? A return? Editor: Trapped, definitely. It feels very… contained. Is the figure supposed to be an angel? Curator: Perhaps. Or maybe something more primal. The stark black and white, the textures of the stone… They echo ancient burial grounds, rituals we’ve forgotten. What is the figure facing? The dark unknown, or the rock of ages? Perhaps it's about vulnerability exposed. The artist bares his soul, setting up this landscape. It seems both desolate and oddly serene. Editor: Desolate for sure. So it's less about what is literally *there*, and more about the feelings it conjures? The sense of place is not as important as a state of mind? Curator: Precisely! Appelt wasn't after scenic vistas; he wanted to externalize internal landscapes. Each element - the figure, the cave, the stones, the monochrome tonality – becomes symbolic, each carries emotional weight. This is not only his subjective state of mind: but the feeling in all of us. This cave is both an ending and a beginning, isn't it? It's where the light both leaves, and where it starts to come into the picture. Editor: Definitely something to sit with. Thanks! I will leave some space to embrace the feelings.
