Curator: This engraving, "Siddende dame og Amorin," dating roughly from 1780 to 1836, presents us with a seated woman and a playful Cupid. The artist behind this enchanting scene is Oluf Olufsen Bagge, and it’s currently housed right here at the SMK. Editor: Oh, it's so delicate! The lady has such a serene face. And the cupid, such a mischievous air. Is it just me, or is there a melancholy hanging over the entire image, despite the sweetness of the subject? Curator: I think you’ve hit on something crucial. The piece dances in that transitional space, exhibiting both classical themes through the Cupid and figure, while hinting at the growing sentimentalism of the Romantic era. Editor: The setting almost feels theatrical, like a tableau vivant about to come to life on stage. Did prints like this have a wide reach at the time? Curator: Absolutely. Prints were critical for distributing imagery, allowing wider access to visual culture beyond the elite. These romantic images served as tools that reinforced social hierarchies. Note, that such imagery was specifically available for viewing and ownership in domestic sphere for the female viewer. Editor: It makes you wonder, doesn’t it, about the power that lies in who gets to own or interact with art? This cupid is so different from Renaissance versions. Much less imposing! And what is he doing, anyway? Almost like trying to crown her with flowers. Curator: A delicate exchange of affection, perhaps. The engraving technique allows for incredibly fine details – you see it in the woman’s dress and the Cupid's little wings. But to me, it brings to life those very personal and vulnerable connections that happen when sharing an intimate moment with someone. Bagge really tapped into that universal human longing. Editor: The woman does seem utterly still as if holding her breath, waiting for a silent question to be asked. Thank you! Curator: Yes, the ability to speak across time like this piece still allows continues to be remarkable to me!
