This "Prentbriefkaart aan Joop Sjollema" seems to have been made with ink on paper, but it’s not dated. The handwriting is a process in itself, I always feel, with these old postcards. I love the loops and connections between the letters, almost drawing as writing, and the ink is a beautiful, deep black. Each word and phrase is a little gesture in itself. The stamp and address are also marks, the traces of a life, a message sent. It’s almost like a little abstract expressionist painting, but with words. Looking at it, I'm reminded of Cy Twombly's scrawling, poetic mark-making or even some of the concrete poets who combined text and image. There is a beauty in embracing the open-endedness of art, welcoming all these different voices and perspectives.
