This is a watercolour called Annecy by Zinaida Serebriakova. Look at the way the buildings loom up from the river with that earthy, muted palette. I can just imagine Serebriakova, perched somewhere nearby, rapidly capturing the scene, mixing colours, and adding water, letting the paint do its thing. I love the way the hanging laundry contrasts with the architecture! It makes you think about the everyday lives within those stone walls, the domestic work that goes on, framed by the windows. The whole thing reminds me a little of Vuillard, the way he looked for beauty in the ordinary. When I see it, I wonder about her process, her perspective, and what she hoped to express. How do you feel?
