Juan Gris made this painting, “Le guéridon”, with oil on canvas. I really like how Gris sets up a space without fully committing to it. It's like he's saying, "Here's a table, maybe," with all these shapes that hint at objects. Look at the browns and greys – they're like a quiet conversation, right? You can almost feel him layering the paint, deciding what to show and what to hide. I love the guitar especially, how it’s both there and not there. It's not a photo-realistic guitar, but somehow, through these layered planes, it captures the essence of one. It's like he's thinking about the idea of a guitar, not just painting what he sees. Gris reminds me of another favourite, Giorgio Morandi, in his quiet attention to still life. But while Morandi is all soft edges, Gris is sharper, more angular. They're both exploring the same world, just with different accents. Art's like that, an ongoing conversation, you know?
