Louis Royer created this portrait medallion of Pieter Huidekoper, the mayor of Amsterdam, from plaster, sometime between 1842 and 1849. Plaster is a humble material, made from gypsum, a readily available mineral. Yet, its capacity to capture fine detail made it a popular choice for portraiture. Royer, as the inscription "sculp" tells us, skillfully sculpted the plaster while still wet, carefully carving away the surface to reveal Huidekoper’s profile. The precision and detail achieved showcase Royer's mastery, elevating the medium beyond its common associations. The dark frame surrounding the plaster contrasts with the portrait, further emphasizing the sitter's features. Given plaster’s relative affordability and ease of use, this medallion offered a way to commemorate public figures, and to circulate their likeness. It's a reminder that artistic expression, even when seemingly traditional, is deeply intertwined with the socio-economic conditions of its time.
