Johann Sadeler I created this engraving, "Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane," sometime in the late 16th century. During this time, the Catholic Church was facing the rise of Protestantism, leading to intense religious and political conflict. Here, we see Christ kneeling in prayer, bathed in divine light, while his disciples slumber nearby. Below, soldiers approach, a visual representation of the betrayal and suffering that awaits him. The emotional weight of the scene is palpable, reflecting the human experience of anguish and isolation. Sadeler's work maintains traditional religious narratives while capturing the emotional and psychological depth of its subjects, creating a space for personal reflection. The engraving provides a lens through which to consider the complexities of faith, doubt, and the human condition during times of upheaval.
