This cockade with lis and knot for the shako of the Groningen student corps flank company was made around 1830-1831 by an anonymous artist. The composition, with its arrangement of disparate materials, offers a study in contrasts. The fan of pleated fabric radiates from a central point, creating a play of light and shadow across its surface. The metallic sheen of the lis and knot presents a stark contrast to the fabric’s delicate texture, while the dark, fractured form introduces a discordant note to the composition. This juxtaposition of materials and textures creates a sense of tension, destabilizing any fixed meaning. The cockade invites us to consider the interplay between ornamentation and utility, tradition and change.
