Léonor Fini gave us Retour de voyage II in paint, though I don't know when exactly. It’s got this dreamy, surreal vibe, right? Look at the way she handles color. It's all soft, muted tones, like a faded memory. The way the figure emerges from the background, it's almost like she's part of the fabric of the painting itself. The paint looks thin and smooth and I am interested in how Fini uses very little in the way of brushstrokes to create this image. And that fabric, that draped material, it feels so tactile, even though it's just paint. It makes me think about how we use clothes to construct identity, or maybe even to hide. It's like she's playing with these ideas of surface and depth, what we show and what we conceal. Fini reminds me a bit of Remedios Varo, another surrealist painter who explored similar themes of identity and transformation. It makes me think about art as this ongoing conversation, where artists are constantly riffing off each other, exploring new ways of seeing and feeling.
