Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created this design for a church window with graphite, pen and brown ink, and watercolor. Cachet, who lived through both World Wars, was deeply interested in the symbolism and allegory of religious stories, themes which offered solace and meaning during tumultuous times. Note the careful arrangement of figures. Along the sides, the artist sketches what may be the twelve apostles. At the bottom, the depiction of the Holy Family emphasizes both the divinity as well as the humanity of Christ through his mother. Cachet's window design draws on centuries of Christian artistic tradition. Yet, it also reflects the early 20th century’s search for spiritual grounding amid rapid social change. While looking at the work, consider how themes of faith, hope, and community resonate across time, offering comfort in the face of uncertainty.
