This untitled drawing was made by Steve Keister, using what looks like graphite and brown wax crayon on paper. The colors are subdued, quiet. But these marks are alive, aren’t they? They remind us that artmaking is about a process. It's a dialogue with the materials, a kind of dance. I love the physicality of it, the way the crayon leaves a trail, a residue of its movement. The paper itself is stained and marked - it becomes a ground. Look at the long black diagonal line cutting across the form. See how it interrupts the geometry of the box, bringing the whole image to life? Keister’s work reminds me of Richard Tuttle. They both have this light touch, an ability to find magic in the simplest of gestures. Like art, it's not about answers but about questions.
