Editor: This is a coin, attributed to Arcadius, called AE Arcadius. I find the figures and inscriptions on it, worn by time, almost ghostly. What stories do you think this little object could tell us? Curator: Well, imagine holding the weight of an empire in your hand! It’s a tangible link to Arcadius, a ruler of the Eastern Roman Empire. Do you see how the images and inscriptions speak of power and authority? Editor: I do! It's amazing to think someone actually spent this. So it's less about art, and more about utility and propaganda? Curator: Perhaps it’s both, wouldn’t you say? The artistry, however humble, was intentional, meant to convey a message. What sort of message, do you think? Editor: That's a good point. It does make me wonder about the emperor's aspirations. Thanks! Curator: Indeed! It's a small window into a vast and complex world. I appreciate the chance to look closer together.
