Albertus Verhoesen made this print, "Hussar No. 6," using etching and possibly some engraving. The marks left by these processes give a sense of the controlled hand of the artist. The print is defined by line work. Note how the etched lines define the form and texture of the horse and rider. See how the different weights and densities of lines create shading and volume. These details add depth and realism to the image. While the print captures the romanticism of military life, there is an element of labor involved to create the plate from which the print was produced. In the end, understanding the material choices and production methods deepens our appreciation, and the work's historical and cultural context.
