This is a design for a stained-glass window, "Ontwerp voor glasraam 14 geschonken door de Burgemeesters en Raden van Amsterdam," by Pieter Jansz., made with pen and watercolor. The composition is structured vertically. It comprises twelve square panels arranged in a grid, each adorned with elaborate heraldic shields and emblems framed by ornate cartouches. At the top, a semi-circular panel displays the coat of arms of Amsterdam flanked by lions and cherubic figures. The piece is delineated by detailed linework, with delicate, transparent washes of color accentuating the crests and symbols. This layering creates depth and visual interest, while the formal arrangement emphasizes the structured hierarchy of civic pride and communal patronage. This use of heraldry and decorative framing speaks to the cultural codes of status and identity that were prevalent in seventeenth-century Dutch society.
