Scène Galante 

Nikolaus Knüpfer painted this scene on a wooden panel sometime in the first half of the 17th century. The oil paint allowed him to capture a tableau of leisurely figures, enjoying a moment of revelry. Observe how the colors are built up, layer upon layer, bringing the scene to life. The artist’s skill is evident in how he manipulated the fluidity of the medium to create textures, from the sheen of the satin garments to the soft glow of the faces. Knüpfer was clearly proficient in the conventions of oil painting, which by the 17th century had become very well established. This tells us much about the artist's background and training.
