Paul Signac made this oil on canvas painting, Antibes, the towers, sometime in his lifetime. Signac's application of paint is so fascinating here! This isn't just a picture; it's a field of tiny, deliberate strokes, each one a little decision, a little experiment. Look closely, and you’ll see the way he builds up form and light with these little dabs of pure color. The materiality of this work is just lovely, the surface vibrates. He’s not trying to hide the process but reveling in it, inviting us to see how the image comes together, bit by bit. I'm drawn to the way the water shimmers, each stroke seems to capture a fleeting moment of light and reflection. It's almost like looking at a mosaic or some kind of textile. This feels connected to the pointillist experiments of his friend Seurat, but Signac brings such a breezy, bright, Mediterranean feel that is all his own. It's a reminder that art is always a conversation, a back-and-forth between artists and ideas.
