Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst designed this stained glass window with chalk and graphite. Look at the drawing and imagine the artist's hand moving across the surface, blocking out shapes. I love the simplicity of the earth-toned palette. It makes me feel like I’m looking at a landscape, or an open hand rising up to the sun. But what does it mean? Maybe it’s a symbol of humanity, or maybe it’s just about the beauty of light and color. I wonder what it was like for Holst to be working on this piece, knowing it would eventually become a stained-glass window, glowing with color and light. The forms remind me of other stained-glass artists like, say, Marc Chagall. What do you see?
