Tom Young created this gelatin silver print, "Tree Curtain", using a traditional photographic process. The image begins with light-sensitive emulsion spread on paper, an industrial product, and the final result depends on a combination of mechanical and chemical means. The transformation from tree to photograph hinges on the act of observation, a human interaction, and the chemical reaction of silver compounds to light. The tonal range of the photograph is influenced by the careful management of light exposure and development time, showcasing the artist's technical expertise. The texture of the final print is a result of the materials used - the slick surface of the paper contrasts with the matte shadows of the gelatin. Although we think of photography as a purely representational medium, here we see that the material and making also have a huge impact on the final image.
