The cat 1956

Will Barnet created "The Cat" using serigraph, also known as screen printing, a technique that allows for bold colors and flat shapes. The composition is structured around interlocking geometric forms defined by color and line, evoking the spirit of synthetic cubism. Orange, blue, gray and yellow interact on the canvas and suggest recognizable motifs such as cat-like features. The eye-like form toward the top left can be interpreted using semiotics; the blue shape encircled by orange serves as a signifier for sight and perception. The cat image is broken down into its basic geometric components.
