Aldo Mondino made this mosaic out of chocolate, and the colours are like a sweetshop, blues, reds, greens, and browns. Imagine the making of it, the opening of wrappers, foil catching the light, the smell of cacao, and the sticking of chocolate onto a surface – what a dreamy, tasty process. I wonder what Mondino was thinking when he made it, the gesture of placing each chocolate, constructing the horizontal rows that make up this self-portrait. Look at how the chocolates are arranged, the different colours and shapes creating a grid, like pixels in an image. The foil wrappers add a reflective quality, catching the light and creating a sense of movement. "Qui c'est moi?" it asks – who am I? – spelt out with chocolates. The playfulness of this work reminds me of other artists who experiment with unusual materials and challenge traditional notions of what art can be, inspiring a sense of curiosity and wonder. Ultimately, artists are in conversation, riffing off each other's ideas, using different mediums to ask big questions.
