This distribution coupon belonged to George Hendrik Breitner, and was made in Amsterdam sometime between April 1920 and March 1921. Look at this piece of paper, so fragile, so precise, and imagine the world from which it came. Paper ephemera like this feel so different from a painting, but it's easy to imagine the anonymous designer carefully drawing the lines, choosing the typeface, laying out the text, and maybe even thinking about Breitner, the famous painter who would be receiving this card. The contrast of the bold, blocky typeface with the personal signature, looping and confident. The weight of history bears down on the card, but then it was just a part of everyday life; you went and got your fuel with it. I imagine the paper might have spent time in Breitner's pocket, slowly crumpling, gaining in texture, becoming a memory of a moment. The traces of that exchange, like the memory of a painted mark, offer an intimate connection to the artist and the anonymous designer.
