This is ‘Sloot met knotwilgen,’ or ‘Ditch with pollard willows,’ an etching made by Barbara Elisabeth van Houten. You know, the great thing about etchings is how immediate they feel. The artist is thinking, and we can see the marks of that thought so clearly! Look at the willow tree on the left bank, how it leans ever so slightly, weighed down with the sheer mass of all those scratchy, spindly branches. The surface is almost velvety, with tiny marks built up to create this atmospheric landscape. Van Houten uses this web of marks to create a sense of depth in the image, so you can really imagine yourself stepping into that scene. The soft light and dark contrasts remind me of Corot. But there’s something very personal here, too. She's not just depicting a landscape, but creating a whole world. You know, art isn't about answers, it's about exploring the questions.
