Fernand Léger, a key figure in early modernism, made "Tails of Comets" using oil on canvas. Léger's work exists in the wake of the first World War, which profoundly shifted artistic consciousness. Like many artists of his time, he sought new forms to express a changed world. There is a negotiation here between figuration and abstraction. Notice how the monochromatic palette and simplified forms reduce the figures to elemental shapes, almost like bodies floating in space. The ghostly, cloud-like objects could be read as figures or as abstracted celestial forms, suggesting the uncertainty and fluidity of identity and existence in the modern era. Léger once said, "The object must be crushed, broken – so that a new world can arise from its fragments." With "Tails of Comets," Léger invites us to contemplate the possibilities for constructing new realities from the fragments of the old. It reflects not just a personal vision, but a collective attempt to redefine human experience.
