This is 'Possessed Girl' by Paul Klee, and it's hard to tell exactly when it was made or with what. The colours here are a ghostly palette of thin washes, like watercolour. There's an overall sense of transparency, with a little texture from the paper coming through. The marks don't seem too laboured, as if the image was brought into being quite intuitively. Take a look at the mouth. Klee is rendering the girl's teeth with these tiny square-shaped marks. It looks almost childlike. He uses these slightly awkward shapes to hint at the mouth's interior, adding to the slightly disturbing effect. It reminds me of other painters, like James Ensor, who use simplified figures and distorted features to express psychological themes and expose inner turmoil. Ultimately, the piece embodies the power of art to conjure complex ideas and feelings through seemingly simple means.
