Giotto painted "The Presentation of the Infant Jesus in the Temple" with tempera on a wood panel. Note how Giotto arranges this sacred event around the altar, a potent symbol of sacrifice and consecration. The Christ Child is presented, quite literally, across this threshold. Consider the gesture of Mary’s open hand, offering her son. This motif echoes through centuries, appearing in Roman depictions of emperors offering gifts to the gods, a symbol of devotion and power. Yet here, the direction is inverted; it signifies profound humility. The weight of this image lies in the emotional undercurrent - the poignant act of a mother surrendering her child, a powerful invocation of shared human experiences. The symbols cycle, and repeat, evolving in expression, yet tethered to our collective memory. These resurfacing gestures connect us, viewer and viewed, across time.
