Peter Becker made this drawing of a large-leafed plant sometime in the 19th century. During this period, there was a growing scientific interest in botany, as well as new technologies making art more accessible, which contributed to a rise in naturalistic depictions of plants. At first glance, this work might seem like a simple botanical study. However, by choosing to focus on the delicate balance of nature, and the intricate details of the leaves, Becker creates something more emotive. During this time, the natural world was often idealized as a space of purity and tranquility, distinct from the burgeoning urban landscapes. Becker’s soft, tentative lines capture the quiet dignity of plant life. Through this intimate portrayal, the drawing invites us to reflect on our own place within the natural world. The plant life is set against an almost blank background, leaving room for contemplation.
